More About Autism Services
Autism and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are terms for a group of complex neurobehavioral disorders. In 2013, with the publication of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), all autism disorders were merged into one overall diagnosis of ASD. The diagnostic category no longer includes separate diagnoses for Asperger’s Syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified. The DSM-5 also includes a related, but distinct, diagnostic category of Social Communication Disorder.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairment in reciprocal social interaction, impairment in communication, and the presence of repetitive and stereotypic patterns of behaviors, interests, and activities. However, symptoms and their severity vary widely across these three core areas. It may result in relatively mild challenges for someone on the high functioning end of the autism spectrum. For others, symptoms may be more severe, when repetitive behaviors and lack of spoken language interfere with everyday life. The basic symptoms of autism can be accompanied by other medical conditions and challenges, which can also vary widely in severity. Research shows the most effective treatment for individuals with ASD is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is considered the treatment of choice for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) focuses on the principles that explain how learning takes place.
ABA methods are intended to support individuals with ASD in many ways:
- To increase behaviors (e.g. to increase on-task behavior, or social interactions) and to teach new skills (e.g., life skills, communication skills, or social skills);
- To maintain behaviors (e.g., self-control and self-monitoring procedures to maintain and generalize job-related social skills);
- To generalize or to transfer behavior from one situation or response to another (e.g., from completing assignments in the resource room to performing as well in the mainstream classroom);
- To restrict or narrow conditions under which interfering behaviors occur (e.g., modifying the learning environment); and
- To reduce interfering behaviors (e.g., self-injury or stereotypy).
Parents receive training with the goal of being able to take an active role in their child’s intervention and expand upon their child’s learning. Training is intended to help parents teach their child in a variety of environments, take advantage of naturally occurring learning opportunities, and encourage their child to be successful and independent in daily life.

Blue Sea is organized as a “professional collaborative”. Our executive management team is comprised of individuals from key professional disciplines including education, psychology, social work, speech language pathology, occupational and physical therapy and the law.
Our providers aim to improve socially significant behavior by using interventions that are based upon principles of learning theory and that have been evaluated in experiments using reliable and objective measurement. Our providers consist of Licensed Behavior Analysts (LBA), Board-Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA), and Special Education teachers with practical experiences in developing individualized behavior intervention programs and working with individuals and their families, school staff and various other stakeholders.

Blue Sea works collaboratively with key stakeholders to provide mental health services through a variety of approaches. Using evidenced-based and best-practice standards, we work with school districts, children and parents to help our population reach goals through the academic year and beyond.
From the moment we commence working with on a case, Blue Sea, unlike other agencies, takes the time to build rapport, enabling our providers to start work in a more efficient way. The success of this can be seen in how quickly our providers are able to establish service plans and interventions that are personalized to each individual and his/her situation/needs.
This individualized approach is also one we take with the providers who work with us. At Blue Sea, when you are a provider, you become part of the Blue Sea Family. We invest the time to build strong professional relationships with our providers so that we can both support one another and elevate each other professionally. The Mental Health Provider Group comes together not only to have regular provider meetings but also has the opportunity to participate in continuing education both at Blue Sea, and together in the community.

SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY A speech-language pathologist is a licensed health care professional who diagnoses, evaluates, and treats disorders of speech, voice, swallowing, and/or language. Speech-language pathologists treat communication problems in infants, children, adolescents and adults. You might consult a speech-language pathologist to help someone with a speech impairment, such as stuttering, slurred speech, or voice problems; someone whose speech or language has been affected by a stroke or head injury; someone whose speech has been affected by surgery; someone with a swallowing disorder.
You might use the services of a speech-language pathologist for a child if you have difficulty understanding what the child is trying to say; you think the child is speaking differently from children of the same age; the child has difficulty telling you what he or she wants; or the child has difficulty understanding what people are saying.

Occupational & Physical Therapy Services
Blue Sea’s school-based occupational therapy practitioners support academic achievement and social participation by supporting a student’s ability to participate in desired daily school activities or “occupations” within all school routines, including recess, classroom, and cafeteria time. They help children fulfill their role as students and prepare them for college, career, and community integration. Occupational Therapists utilize prevention, promotion, and intervention strategies for mental and physical health and well-being.
Blue Sea’s school-based physical therapy practitioners design and perform therapeutic interventions, including compensation, remediation and prevention strategies and adaptations, focusing on functional mobility and safe, efficient access and participation in educational activities and routines in natural learning environments. They promote motor development and the student’s participation in everyday routines and activities that are a part of his or her program.
Occupational and Physical Therapists are licensed professionals who:
- Offer services that serve individual students, groups of students, whole classrooms, and whole school initiatives.
- Collaborate within the education team to ensure free and appropriate education for students with disabilities
- Support student success by preparing students for further education, employment and independent living.

Blue Sea offers learning and literacy services to students, families, and school districts in a variety of educational settings and placements. We collaborate with key stakeholders in the design and implementation of educational programs for individual students, cohorts, and staff. We have experience with Common core, various evidence-based literacy instruction, and evidence-based interventions including, but not limited to, Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, and Lindamood-Bell.
Our educational and literacy consultants and staff are available to provide support in the areas of universal design for learning, differentiated instruction, inclusion, and response to intervention. Our consultants and staff also collaborate with our behavior intervention and executive functioning specialists in the development and implementation of functional behavior assessments, behavior intervention plans, and various strategies to support students in need of support.
Home instruction is provided to students of all age, and in a variety of learning areas including reading, mathematics, science, social studies and more. Our special and general education certified and licensed teachers provide in-district and home-based instructional services.
We also provide bilingual consulting and diversity services to support bridging cultural differences and gaps that present in the areas of evaluation and learning generally.
