March is National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM), a time when BLUE SEA joins with our school partners to educate others about developmental disabilities and highlight the many ways people with and without disabilities come together to form strong, diverse communities.

This year’s DDAM campaign theme encourages us to go “Beyond the Conversation.” It asks us to celebrate the progress we have made toward community inclusion so far while also thinking bigger and bolder about “what’s next?”

Blue Sea is committed to making a positive impact in the lives of students with disabilities, empowering them to learn and live inclusively and independently.

During Women’s History Month, BLUE SEA celebrate women's achievements both past and present. We appreciate those who have served as leaders in their communities and have transformed our schools.

Today we’re celebrating Margaret Bancroft, considered the pioneer of special education. Bancroft created the first private school for children with developmental delays and made specialized programs for her students, helping launch the field of special education.

By creating the first private boarding school for children with disabilities, Margaret Bancroft accomplished two key things. First, she acknowledged and prioritized the students’ basic social and emotional needs. Secondly, Bancroft created a safe space for them to receive care and attention.

Margaret Bancroft made an early case for the importance of Social Emotional Learning (SEL). Today, schools across the country are incorporating SEL into their special education programs as a way to more fully support students. Bancroft was also instrumental in promoting government mandates now in place to protect and affirm the rights of all students to receive a quality education.

Blue Sea celebrates Margaret Bancroft and all those women who continue to honor her legacy supporting and serving students with disabilities.
